Last 2 Weeks of the Semester!

There is a lot going on before the end of the year. We have 2 weeks of classes left and then FINALS week. Finals week is going to be killer hard this year. Class wise, this has been the hardest year.. I am getting more and more into my major. For the whole year, I have been in New Testament Greek.. It has been the hardest class I have ever taken and I have had to study more for that class then I have any other class. But, the end is near and there is only 2 weeks left. But the next 2 weeks is going to be challenging.. and difficult.. I am going to spend sooo much more time studying for this class, I have to be more disciplined the next 2 weeks so I can get the grade I want in that class. Its going to be hard, but I know that when I am done with this class, I am going to feel accomplished and know that all my hard work has paid off.

Also, there is a lot of events going on in the dorm and around campus! We are having Water Wars this Thursday outside of our dorm. At water wars, we are going to have slip and slide... water balloons, baby pool kick ball and water guns. this is going to be such a good time to put down the books and have a great time with the girls in my dorm. We are also taking a group of girls to Status.. a college ministry in Orlando. This is going to be one last fun trip before the finals week.

So, as you can see.. There is a lot to be done in the next 2 1/2 weeks. For me, I need to keep my head on straight and stay focused and not think about the summer too much. Even though summer is just a few weeks away, the last few weeks of school are very very important. :)

Beyond Belief

Beyond Belief.... it can mean so many different things. Thinking about our school's slogan, so many different things are running through my head about what it really means.

To me, Beyond Belief is knowing that God put me at Warner for a reason. Warner has been the running board to where my dreams are coming into play. I am practicing all that I have wanted to do in my life and in ministry, and being here has helped me fulfill that thus far. To really think of where I have been in my life, where I am now and where God is going to take me, it is really "Beyond Belief." It's something cool, something really exciting to think about when I really trust God. He can make all my dreams into a reality and Warner has been a place where I can really be who I am and allow the people around me shape me into the person I am today and will be sometime down the road.

So to sum that all up, "Beyond Belief" to me is just really trusting God with my future and how when I really learn to do that he will take me places I never thought I would have been.

Practice What You Preach

As students, you all have many people in your life right now that you come in contact with on a daily basis. Throughout your life you will have many mentors, whether you realize it or not. I challenge each of you to choose your mentor wisely, no matter what your field or discipline. Here is a tried and true litmus test for choosing a mentor. Do they practice what they preach? For instance, I have chosen a career in training and conditioning. If I teach about certain principles of weightlifting, but my personal program consists of opposite ideas, what does that say about me? The "do as I say and not as I do" philosophy does not work. Find somebody that lives what they preach.

Summer is coming...

We only have a month left of school. It is so very exciting to think of, but at the same time, it's so stressful. With summer break approaching, there are many decisions that I have to make along with the decision of the people close to me.

So many times, I think that I need to have it all together before I experience all that God has in store for me for the summer. I am realizing more and more each day that I need to learn how to trust God so much in all that I do, so I can discern His calling and purpose for my life. It is about learning how to just not worry about all that I have to do, or all that I want to do in my life... its about learning how to be content with the journey I am on now, and enjoying every minute of it..

So, I guess what I am trying to say is that, I don't need to worry about future plans or whether or not I am going to end up where I want to be.. I need to learn how to sit back and enjoy where I am in my life, because it is going to make me more of who I am today and who I will be in the future.

Spring Break

Last week was Spring Break. This spring break, I went back to Casper, Wyoming. I know out of all the places to go, I picked Wyoming. But there was a reason for that, I spent last summer in Casper interning at Highland Park Community Church working with the youth. Last summer, I got really close to most of the youth that I worked with. The youth at this church really taught me the importance of being real and loving people in all that I do. When I left Casper in the summer, I was changed by all the stuff that I learned from the church. So, I decided to go back for spring break...

I flew out of Orlando on Friday the 6th and flew into Denver. I spent that whole weekend in the Denver area with some of the girls from the youth. We stayed at a hotel in Colorado, went to the movies, shopping, swam, and went to a spa! It was such a relaxing and much needed weekend!

I got into Casper Sunday afternoon and one of my good friends and I went to a small group and camp fire at someone's house. It was a really great time to reconnect with a lot of the students that I was close to. I had a lot of Starbucks runs and more time this week to reconnect with older friends who helped me see and realize the importance of ministry last summer...

It was a great week to catch up with a lot of people and talk. This past week was so much needed. I relaxed, and feel so refreshed about myself, and where it is that I want to go with my life. The people there are so great.

May sound crazy, but Casper, WY has a special place in my heart. I learned a lot there and have applied what I learned to my everyday life.

Instead of hitting the beaches like normal and getting a tan, I went to Wyoming, where I got wind burn. lol. Being in Casper again was such a great week. It made me realize a lot about myself.

Love

We are only asked to love,
to offer hope to the many hopeless,
We don't get to choose all the endings,
but we are asked to play the rescuers,
We won't solve all the mysteries,
and our hearts will certainly break in such a vulnerable life, but it is the best way,
We were made to be lovers, bold in broken places,
pouring ourselves out again and again...

I read this today, and it really made me think about how I love people and how I share my love with others...

This year I have took more noticed that the people around me are seeking something, they are longing for something, and that something is love...

My heart breaks for all the pain people are facing... for the people who really don't know what's next in their lives... and for people who seem like there is no more hope...

I want to be that person who is going to love people more and more.. I want to be that person who is going to be there for someone in their time of need... I want to love the way Christ has loved me... I want to pass the love that people have shown me onto the students on campus...

We are only asked to love.

Steve Fitzgugh

Last week at Warner Steve Fitzhugh was on campus speaking in Chapel for Spiritual Life Week. Steve is a former NFL player for the Denver Broncos. Steve not only an author but he is humorous and spends much of his time communicating with teens about drugs, alcohol, and religion. He travels around the nation as a guest speaker at church retreats, schools, and other events. Very active in southeast Washington DC area, Steve Fitzhugh bought 3 former crack houses there to create "The House", a youth center which ministers to teenagers in the community. Steve Fitzhugh is also very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Last week in chapel, Steve really grabbed the attention on the students, faculty and staff at Warner. He knows how to relate with people on all different levels and can meet people where they are in their walk with Christ and their everyday life. In chapel, Steve could be cracking jokes one minute and the next be so serious. He allowed people to really think about where they are in their life and how they go about each day.

For me last week, God really used Steve to help me see and realize that it's not about me in this life. He opened my eyes to see that being a servant leader is the most important of all leadership qualities. He allowed me to take more notice in how I love people and God. I really think that God allowed Steve to challenge-- not just me but the whole campus as well.

I am looking forward to all that is going to happen on campus this semester! :)

New Year

So it's the start of a new year and a new semester! Things have gotten off to a great start with classes, RA stuff and just hanging out and having fun with friends! We are only 3 weeks into the semester and I have so much work to do already! My school work this semester will really keep me busy and on top of things.

I am looking forward to this semester because I know that it has a lot in store for me, for my friends and for us as a university. I know that in the midst of all the stress of trying to complete assignments and the business of just life, there is going to be great things happening on this campus.

Using resources...

In my opinion, college is more than just going to class and taking tests. It is a time to identify your strengths and weaknesses, develop relationships and get in tune with your passions. The best advice I can offer to current students is this: find somebody on campus that IS or HAS been where you want to go. If you want to be a lawyer, talk to somebody like Dr. White. If you want to go into ministry, talk to Dr. Sanders. The list goes on and on. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of very talented professionals on this campus. Identify the person and go to their office. Email them. Ask them about their experiences. Ask them about possible routes you can take in order to reach your goal. Talk about practice, theory, research, anything that you can do to increase your knowledge base. At the end of the day, you will benefit from this type of interaction. After all, you can only get so much in a 50 or 75 minute class. In order to separate yourself from the rest of the competitive world, YOU need to go the extra mile! Have a great week.

IYC Internship!

A lot as happened in the past week.

First of all, I found out that I got the internship that I have been praying about for a long time! For this internship, I will be working with Church of God Ministries and helping lead and plan the next International Youth Convention (IYC) for the Church of God.

On this team, I will be helping lead and mentor the new Student Leadership Team and helping them see and understand the importance of being a Christ-Centered Leader everywhere that they go. For planning for this convention, we meet twice before IYC. The meetings are held 18 months before IYC and also a year before. Our very first meeting will be held this weekend in Orlando. In this meeting, we will be planning all the details for this convention including the theme, picking the artist and speakers and making the schedule.

I am soooo excited to have this opportunity once again (can you tell?!). I know it will give me the chance to make new friendships that will last a lifetime. It will allow me to grow more in my walk with Christ, develop more as a leader and as a person. I am looking forward to what all God has in store for me and for this team!

The other exciting event this week was Thanksgiving break (Time off is always nice!). I went home once again to West Virginia for the break. It was good to spend some time at home and hang out with my little sisters.

Now, I am back at Warner, studying for finals and preparing for Christmas break!

WV State Youth Convention

Recently, some of my best friends and I took a road trip to West Virginia for the WV State Youth Convention. This trip has special meaning to me because I was going home!! I'm from West Virginia so I was excited to take my friends to the places that mean so much to me.

On Thursday, we started our drive. The drive up there was something else, fourteen hours of laughter and there was never a dull moment! We arrived in WV Friday afternoon. When we got there we set up the Warner booth and checked into our cabin. The convention itself was alot of fun. It took me back to the times that I attened state youth convention and when I helped plan the conventions. Saturday I helped out with the convention almost all day, and later that night, my friends from Warner and I just enjoyed hanging out and got to know each other alot better.

Although this weekend was "work" related, I enjoy my trip so much. I got to see people from home who mean the most to me. I saw my parents and my little sisters. I also saw my mentors and the leaders who helped me discover my call to ministry and the ones who helped get me to where I am today.

This was a great weekend.

A few thoughts...

A few thoughts on the upcoming name change at this institution...

As you all know, on Tuesday, October 28, Warner Southern College officially becomes Warner University. For people who have been associated with this institution for some time, this is a significant event. For most, this name change represents the amazing growth that has taken place on this campus. I've had the opportunity to experience a couple of different perspectives concerning Warner so in that respect, this name change is a rather special event to me. I have been associated with this college since 1991 and have observed first-hand much of the new and exciting growth and maturation of this school. During this time, I've been the son of an administrator, student athlete, alumnus, and member of the faculty. I've had a number of friends and family work at this institution. The campus has almost completely shifted from the east side of Highway 27 to the west side, and I've watched building after building rise up to accompany the Turner Athletic Center. Warner holds a very special place in my heart and will continue to do so, regardless of its name.

This name change represents growth, but it also represents the VERY hard work that many people have put into Warner. I'd like to use this opportunity to recognize certain persons whom I have known since my first couple of days on campus as a small kid. They continue to drive this institution to this day. This list is by no means exhaustive, but I would like the current student body, faculty, and staff to understand the sacrifices that these people have made for me and everyone associated with the college over the years. They include - in no particular order: Dr. and Mrs. Sanders, Dr. Bill Rigel, Mrs. Doris Gukich, Mr. Jason Roe, Mrs. Dawn Rafool, Mrs. Alane Richardville, Dr. James Christoph, Dr. Collet Varner, Dr. Jim Moyer, Mr. Greg Rodden, Dr. Steven Darr, Dr. Terry Fasel, Dr. Greg Hall, and Mr. Jeff Sikes. Once again, this list is not exhaustive. There are many more people out there that have had a huge impact on this campus. Some continue to work here at Warner, while others have moved on to other pursuits. I would like to thank everybody for their hard work and dedication. Until next time, have a great day!

A lot is going on...

Hey Everyone!

A lot is going to take place in the next week at Warner. This Thursday is the start of fall break! Me and some of my friends are planning on going to Daytona Beach for the weekend, just to get away from the busyness of school, relax and just have a good time. I am excited to spend that time with my friends and getting to know them more and of course looking forward to spending all weekend on the beach!

Next week is going to be an exciting week at Warner. We are changing our name from Warner Southern College to Warner University. It's very exciting! I am looking forward to the big chapel celebration that we are going to have. I hope this time brings our community closer and also that the name change will bring in more students who would be interested in going here. Warner is growing and it's pretty awesome! I'm excited to see what all is in store for everyone at Warner in the next couple of years!
